Girl Running as part of a Running Program

Our Mission

We are on a mission to debunk the myth that running is daunting by creating an environment where beginners can feel confident and supported every step of the way. Our aim is to make running accessible and enjoyable for everyone, ensuring that no one gets left behind.

About Us

What Sets Us Apart

Running has surged in popularity with events like Park Runs, local road races, and social run clubs, but most groups focus on those who already have a solid understanding of the sport.

We chose to focus on beginners because they often lack the attention they need, and starting running can be intimidating, especially without much fitness or knowledge, or due to concerns about confidence and safety. Our club was created to build a supportive community where people can run before or after work in groups, free from safety worries.

We guide beginners through everything from getting started, understanding the do’s and don’ts, recovering properly, and building fitness.

Many people see running as a daunting sport, but once they start, they often catch the “running bug” leading them to sign up for their first 10k, then a half-marathon, and eventually, even the Two Oceans Ultra or Comrades. While we don’t expect all our runners to reach those levels, we aim to make sure every runner feels confident in their journey.

Our Programmes

We believe that running shouldn’t be intimidating—it's all about finding the right approach that works for you.

That’s why each of our programs is led by a dedicated coach who not only guides but also runs alongside the group, providing support and encouragement every step of the way.

We’re committed to ensuring that by the end of the program, you'll be able to confidently run a full 5km, regardless of your starting fitness level.

No Pressure to be Fast at all

No specific pace is required to join us. Our groups generally run at an 8:30 to 10:00 min/km pace, focusing on building your confidence first—speed will come with time.

We Start Slow & Build up Gradually

Your first run with us starts with intervals: 30 seconds of running & 1 minute of walking. You'll gradually build up & by the end of the program, you'll be running a full 5km.

We Support you in & out of the Program

Our coaches are always here for you. Need advice on new shoes? We’ve got you covered. Missed a session? We’ll send it over so you can catch up on your own. We’re in this together.

Each Program is led by a Dedicated Coach

Our coaches run alongside you and the group, ensuring your form is right, your breathing is on point, and offering guidance every step of the way with unwavering support.

The Team

Can highly recommend this program... I went from doing zero exercise to running 5km comfortably.

At no point did I feel like I was being pushed too hard but rather made steady progress. Have just started the 5-10k and can't wait to run my first 10k soon!

Radio Interview between Cape Talk Radio and Couch Potato Run Club

On Monday 2 September 2024, Couch Potato Run Club was featured on Cape Talk with Liezel van der Westuizen, and we’re excited to share the highlights!

Missed the Show?

Starting to run can be a challenge, especially if you’ve been a “Couch Potato” for a while. Many beginner running clubs leave newcomers feeling left behind, but not us! At Couch Potato Run Club, we focus on support, community, and taking things at your own pace.

We start slow with intervals of 30 seconds of running followed by 1 minute of walking, gradually building up to running a full 5k over 10 weeks. There’s no pressure to be fast; the most important thing to us is that you build confidence.

Whether you’re overweight, the slowest or the most unfit person on the planet, we’re with you every step of the way.
